What does a Reverse Osmosis System do?
A Reverse Osmosis, RO, System removes most dissolved ions from your water including sodium ions, hardness, metallic ions, and anions. Since an RO is a membrane process, it will also remove most suspended materials and bacteria. RO will produce some of most palatable water you can make in your home whether you water comes from surface or underground water sources; whether it is your private well, community well, public water utility well, or a private water utility well.
How does an RO System work?
An RO System uses reverse osmosis, a proven technology incorporating reverse osmosis membranes. The semi-permeable, RO membrane can be compared to a physical barrier. The membrane stops passage of dissolved ions and suspended materials in your home's water. A Homestead System RO has a four stage treatment process. An optional remineralization cartridge can be added to the treated water before is goes to your faucet, bottleless water cooler, and/or ice maker.
How do I know if I need an RO System?
You may need an RO System if you are not satisfied with the taste and clarity of your drinking water from other water treatment equipment you may have in your home.
If you are concerned about heavy metals and pharmaceuticals in your drinking water, you should consider a reverse osmosis system.
If you have a water softener in your home, it removes hardness and dissolved iron from water, it replaces it with sodium. If you are on a low sodium diet, your should consider adding an RO, reverse osmosis, system for your drinking water.
Any special things I should know about a Homestead System RO System?
Most families use an under the sink RO in their kitchen. A separate faucet near the kitchen sink will dispense RO treated water. Also, water lines can be sent to bottle-less water coolers and/or ice makers in your refrigerator. In areas where the water has a high TDS, Total Dissolved Solids, above 400 ppm, some people have a whole house RO when their water source is brackish, or near the ocean.
While an RO system can operate without pretreatment, for maximum efficiency and longest RO membrane life, the water entering an RO should be pretreated with a carbon filter and/or a water softener.
